New Economic Policy (NEP) (16 janv. 1921 – 4 mai 1928)

Description:

Lenin's last political act and solution to Russia's economic conundrum: a compromise between capitalism and socialism to counter peasant opposition. Membership in the Communist party grows through propaganda & draws from the working class, allows peasants to seel extra grain on the free market, and leads to the rise of "nepmen" or individual businessmen who are seen as inheritors of capitalism. Is the beginning of industrialization in Russia. Leads to 1926 split within Communist party leadership: "United Opposition" (permanent revolution -- internationalizing the Russian revolution) vs. "socialism in one country" (building a strong socialist state and waiting for it to spread)
