Description:
The United States became a global power after defeating Spain, ending Spain's colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and securing its position as a Pacific power. The victory in the war led to a peace treaty that required Spain to relinquish its claims on Cuba and cede sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States.Office of the Historian.
