American journalist Paul Kemp takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1960s and struggles to find a balance between island culture and the expatriates who live there.
Johnny Depp suspended his sobriety for this film in order to experience the effects of liquors depicted.
It didn't take long for Bruce Robinson to adapt the screenplay, as he fell into alcoholism again, by drinking a bottle of wine a day. He went into sobriety again after finishing it.
