Cause = candidacy of Prince Leopold Hohenzollern for Spanish throne → candidacy withdrawn under F pressure, but P’s King William I opposed this; Napoleon III declare war on Prussia to restore his popularity in F; Biz saw war w/ F as opportunity to unite N and S G states; Moltke led P armies; P defeated F; marked end of F hegemony in Euro and created unified G
