David (2 août 1772 – 26 août 1825)

Description:

Jacques-Louis David was a French painter, considered one of the most important Neoclassical artists. His style of painting in the 1780s marked the mass departure from the frivolous Rococo style toward the classical austerity, severity, and heightened feeling of Neoclassicism.

He was a passionate, self conscious outsider trained by Boucher. He submitted many works to the Academy, changing his style in the process, before finally getting accepted. His style became stately, enlightened, and simple. When he became a prominent painter, he eventually became the director of art and closed the Academy.

His art was reflective of the changes during and after the French Revolution. At its beginning, his work was revolutionary, but in 1814, it lost its spark and spirit.
