Battle of Coral Sea (4 mai 1942 – 8 mai 1942)

Description:

The battle of the Coral Sea was a battle where the United States and Japanese forces met in a naval and air conflict where the United States turned back the Japanese who were heading into a strategic Port Moresby in New Guinea. The Japanese were trying to take full control of the Coral Sea. This battle happened as the United States found out that the Japanese were going to try to take the fort of Port Moresby and so they tried to stop them intercept them. It was mostly a battle based on aircraft and aircraft carriers and, it was the first naval sea battle where there was not a single shot taken between two surface ships. The US won the battle by harassing Japanese ships with their land-based aircraft in the area. They had a major advantage over the Japanese because they could land their planes on a port and had major reinforcements but the Japanese had all their planes on their ships which could be bombed by United States aircraft. The United States did have aircraft carriers that held planes but they also had land-based bombers that came from Port Moresby. Which, was also what the Japanese were trying to attack, so you can see the importance of Port Moresby. At the end of the four-day battle the United States drove back the Japanese ships and there was no more danger of the Japanese holding Port Moresby.
