salute (1 janv. 1942 – 1 janv. 1942)

Description:

When you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you do a special gesture with your hand. In 1887, this was called the Balch Salute and it involved moving your hand to your forehead and then placing it over your heart before letting it rest by your side. A few years later, in 1892, Francis Bellamy made a new version of the salute. This one involved stretching your arm out with your hand facing down, and then turning it so the palm was facing up. But after the Nazis began using a hand gesture like the Bellamy Salute in the 1930s, the US Congress changed the salute to putting your hand over your heart. This was made laws in 1942. Everyone who is in the Military and veterans can salute when the Pledge is said and when the flag is raised or lowered and also during the National Anthem. The word "salute" sometimes means the words of the Pledge, not just the physical hand gesture.
