Description:
The songhai empire replaced Mali as the dominant power in west africa. It had an elaborate bureaucracy and military, and a navy that controlled Niger river trade. The Songhai emperors were Muslims and built many mosques and centers of learning. However, they also embraced traditional pagan beliefs. In 1591, the Songhai were defeated by the Moroccans because of the Moroccans use of firearms. The Songhai were important because of their role in the slave trade.
