Iraq War (20 mars 2003 – 15 déc. 2011)
Description:
The Iraq War was a major polarizing event in American politics. The war was launched by the President at the time, George W. Bush, who claimed that Iraq was a threat to national security and that they had weapons of mass destruction. These claims were later revealed to be false. This led to division amongst the American public and large amounts of criticism of Bush's administration. The public initially largely supported the war, however as the death toll added up, public support took a sharp decline. Many Republicans supported the war and many Democrats opposed it, creating huge political division. Finally, overall trust in the government decreased greatly after the Iraq War as the false claims about weapons of mass destruction left a bitter taste in many people's mouths, which fueled polarization as opposing parties found it harder to trust one another.
