Good intentioned, many thought it would decrease crime rates (the opposite happened).
Crime, abuse, accidents, and sinful behavior = main concerns of 1920s. Alcohol came to US from Canada and Mexico.
Speakeasies (hidden bars) and Bootleggers (smugglers of alcohol) increased in prohibition.
Al Capone = famous bootlegger / gangster / all around bad guy. Based in Chicago. Made $60 million a year. Known for the St. Valentines Massacre. Jailed for tax-evasion.
