The New Deal (28 mars 1933 – 6 déc. 1941)

Description:

Roosevelt’s program of domestic reform and relief; the three Rs of Relief, Reform, and Recovery did not end the Depression, but they gave hope and security and made government more responsive to the people in bad economic times.

Good impacts include:
1. The federal gov became the largest employer of Americans (still that way).
2. It helped the US avoided famine.
3. Capitalism was preserved (this was considered good at the time). It was altered though.
4. The depression was eased (things probably would have been worse without it).

Bad impacts include:
1. Critics thought the New Deal turned the US into a welfare state and that FDR ruined rugged individualism (is this bad though?).
2. Critics also said that States’ rights were decreased; the ND made the Fed gov more powerful (again, it’s debatable if this is a bad thing).
3. The New Deal discriminated against black workers; they made less than white workers. This is one of the few legitimate negative impacts.
Other criticism include: the deal didn’t fix the depression (WW2 did) and useless jobs were created (ex. Art jobs by WPA).
