Description:
There was mass immigration to cities during this time:
- Lots of tenement housing, crime, and fire.
People start to build up instead of out.
= Trash pick-up wasn’t mandatory, so it was everywhere (flammable)...
- The first generation of city people brought their livestock (contributed to filth). 200,000 horses in 1900. Manure everywhere. Health issues. Automobiles save public health and clean the streets!
New technology:
- Safe elevators, steel, and skyscrapers.
- Electricity, plumbing, and telephones (change job hours).
- Farm machinery, steel plow.
- Street cars (SF), subway (Boston). Solutions to overcrowding.
- Creates modern world and drove the economy.
