Description:

Proxy wars were actual conflict between the two powers over influence in developing nations.

EX:
Korean War (1950-1953): North (comminsm), South (capitalism). North invades south Korea (1950). Truman sends support and troops of south Korea. War ends with a truce and Korea remains divided.

Vietnam War (1955-1975): split into two. North (communism) and South (capitalist). North invades south. US tries to aid South Vietnam, fails and North continues to invade. Norht Vietnam takes over South Vietnam and Vietam becomes communist.
