Reconstruction era (1 déc. 1865 – 1 déc. 1877)
Description:
- time of great promise and hope for African Americans, as it represented a chance to secure their freedom, citizenship, and political rights.
- BUT: Rise of the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow segregation, and the withdrawal of federal support for Reconstruction efforts
- These factors combined to limit the progress of African Americans in the South, leading to a long period of racial oppression and inequality that persisted for decades after Reconstruction ended
“The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery.” W.E.B. Du Bois
