Description:
DURING THE WAR:
- 350,000 African Americans voluntarily joined the army and fought for the USA on the Western Front
- segregation also in the army units
- NAACP: notion of military service as price to pay for equal citizenship ("First your country, then your rights!")
AFTER THE WAR:
- when the soldiers returned home, they faced discrimination and racism by the people and the government
- upon their return, many were lynched (killed by white mobs)
- white veterans received far more recognition for their bravery and sacrifice in the war
