William Byrd is often regarded as one of the greatest composer of the English Renaissance, and a master of all extant vocal styles

• Expanded vocal forces - 5-6 voices as a standard, though some pieces have up to 8

• Increased use of polyphony, text repetition and longer points of imitation
• Antiphonal effects/pairings between groups within the choir (usually high v. low).
• Utilized the typical antiphonal positioning of the choir in the Anglican Cathedral for dramatic contrast (The Great Service, especially)
