Janequin (FR) (1 janv. 1485 – 1 janv. 1558)
Description:
• Considered a master of the “Parisian Chanson”
o often strophic, long metrical patterns, well-balanced quatrains.
o the first few phrases of music are repeated to new text, and often the ending is as well to round out the pieces
o Often are organized according to the scheme AABBC but not always.
• Often cast aside the declamatory nature of the texts to create more programmatic pieces
o More interested in fitting the music to the rhythm of the words themselves than portraying the poetic meaning
o Often used repetitive rhythms to this end, allowing the phrases to fold over bar lines and weave in and out of duple and triple meter that might emphasize a singular word or entire phrase.
• Repetition of very short phrases and words, breaking melodic lines into several motifs.
o Often explored unusual points of melodic phrasing, as such.
o Sometimes displacing the melody metrically
• Use of onomatopoeia, especially within highly programmatic works
o Define this term – “action word”
• Had an interest in using brazen and somewhat “inappropriate” from local poets of significance
• Highly imitative, or use of dialogue between voices
