Josquin Des Prez (FR) (1 janv. 1450 – 1 janv. 1521)

Description:

• Gaffurius cited him as having “exemplary use of parallel 10ths in outer voices”
• Use of Cantus Firmus and drawing melodies from popular folk song
• Careful and thoughtful counterpoint used in highly polyphonic music
• Short melodic cells, or motifs, that are often used in canon or imitation
• Lack of hierarchy within voices
• Scholars notice a development of his style through three periods: early, middle, and late.
• Early style (until about 1485)
o Abstract and melismatic counterpoint
o Likely a result of influence during his formative years with Ockghem
o Relationship between words and music is often tenuous
• Middle Style (until about 1505)
o Developed technique of creating points of imitative motifs based on text
• Late (1505 to death)
o Close relationship between words and notes
o Increasing expression with declamatory phrases
o Economical use of motif – stretching material very far with very little material.
o Heightened pathos through careful balancing of cadences and imitation, against the poetic meaning of the text.
