1958 Lebanon Crisis - Luke (15 juill. 1958 – 25 oct. 1958)
Description:
The Lebanon Crisis was sparked by the announcement of Camille Chamoun running for a second term. Many Lebanese people did not like Chamoun because many thought the United States manipulated him. After Chamoun's announcement, riots began throughout the country. The opposing side was Egyptian-backed pan-Arab militants who disapproved of the current Lebanese president. In a last-ditch effort, Chamoun called on the United States to assist the Lebanese Army, and President Eisenhower agreed.
On July 15, 1958, 1,700 armed Marines entered Beirut with an expectation of battle. The Marines were supported by a strong group of 3 aircraft carriers, 70 warships, 10,000 more troops, and the 82nd Airborne Division at the ready if the Marines needed any backup. When the Marines stormed the beach, they didn't find the heavy artillery they expected. Instead, they found tourists and beachgoers. Though this first picture of the Lebanon scene seems to make the country look like it was a-ok, the reality was that Beirut was much different than most of the country. Throughout Lebanon, multiple strongholds of the opposition caused hundreds of deaths among the Lebanese people.
At the time of the invasion, no one knew this would be the start of many invasions in the Middle East. Many people see the invasion as a change in U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East for the future.
