Little Rock Nine (4 août 1957 – 17 juill. 1960)
Description:
The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine black students who enrolled at a formerly all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Their attendance at school challenged racial segregation in the public schools and tested the Brown vs Board of Education case. The confrontation at Little Rock drew international attention to racism and civil rights in the US. The Little Rock Nine continued to face verbal and physical attacks from white students throughout their time at Central High. In 1958 rather than permitting desegregation, the re-elected governor Faubus closed all of Little Rock’s schools. Many school districts in the South did the same, they closed it or they implementing “school-choice” programs that subsidized white students’ attendance at private segregated academies. The efforts to integrate schools throughout the US continued through the 1960s.
