2nd Italo-Ethiopian War (3 oct. 1935 – 9 mai 1936)
Description:
Ethiopa is a backwards nation lacking any military technology or modern organisation,
because of this it is easily defeated
Ethiopian casualties: 500 K
Italian casualties: 5 K
During the war the League imposed sanctions on Italy (Oct '35 - Jul '36),
they are ineffective because they do not include any sanctions on oil,
additionaly UK did not restrict any Italian shipping going through the Suez Canal,
so Italian reinforcements could freely come in
Musso's gains:
- consolidating strategic position in East Africa
- announcement of Italian Empire - height of Musso's popularity among Italians
(e.g. Italian wives donating their wedding rings to finance the war effort)
BUT:
- Musso gets cocky
- drain on economic and military resources
- budget deficit 2,5 B -> 16 B (lire)
- costly settlement of 130 K Italians
- 250 K troops needed to maintain occupation
- brutal, costly partisan warfare until 1941 (when Italy lost East Africa to the Brits)
- Italy becomes international pariah
Because Musso upset UK and France
he was forced to shift his alliegience to Hitler (who didn't mind aggressive foreign policy),
trade and cooperation between Italy and Germany increases,
from now on its Germany and Italy VS the world
this was is the nail in the coffin for the League and collective security,
Hitler encouraged to remilitarize
