Description:
-First to practically function as the Pope of the RCC:
-Claimed he was the “Vicar of Christ”
-Developed the doctrine of purgatory
-Encouraged prayer to saints and their icons
-Developed the need for celibacy for clergy-members
-Claimed that tradition, and utterances of the
Bishop were equal with Scripture
-Developed the doctrine that the sacraments of the Eucharist and Baptism were salvific
-Instituted the use of relics to reduce time in purgatory (leading to the later invention of indulgences)
-Gregory the Great paved the way for much of the doctrine and departure from Scripture that we see today in the RCC
