Description:

-Bishop of Rome

-Rose to influence at the Council of Chalcedon

-Demonstrated notable political strength

-Began to advocate for the primacy of the Church of Rome

-Developed the doctrine of perpetuity of Roman authority

-This was based off the assumption that the authority of Peter (Keys of the Kingdom, Mt. 16:19) was passed down through succeeding Bishops of the Roman Church

-This came at a time of increasing doctrinal dispersion, and growth in competing church authority

-This also came at a time of increased political influence of the church and its growing power over the state
