Description:
The Roman Republic had a system of governance including two consuls, the Senate, the magistrates and other assemblies. The law was written down in the Law of the Twelve Tables. During this time the Romans grew from a small Roman Republic in Italy, to a Mediterranean power.The myth of the Republics foundation is told in the story of the rape of Lucretia. Prior to the Republic there were seven tyrannical kings. When Lucretia was raped by the son of the king, Lucretia, an honorable woman unlike the majority of other women in the town, killed herself in shame. Thus, she demonstrated the underlying corruption of Rome. Following this the empire was rebuilt as a republic.
The Republic fell when Julius Caesar took power as a dictator after triumphing over Mark Antony. This marked the beginning of the Roman Empire.
