The Edo Shogunate (1 févr. 1603 – 1 janv. 1868)
Description:
The Edo Shogunate dominated Japan for more than 250 years. It was effectively a military dictatorship, which governed Japan using a strict feudal and class system. During this time, the Emperor was essentially a puppet figure, having virtually no real power. The Shogunate greatly isolated Japan from the world in a period known as the “Sakoku”, greatly limiting foreign trade. Moreover, during this time, very few foreigners were allowed to enter the country, and no Japanese were allowed to leave it.
