-reorganisation of NSDAP: failure of Munich Putsch + time in jail led to change in NSDAP tactics (win power through outvoting political opponents, preparation for power e.g. structure of NSDAP as virtual "shadow government")
-originally sentenced to 5 years - lenient treatment of nationalists/right wing, opposed to the left
