Franco-Belgian occupation
of the Ruhr (11 janv. 1923 – 1 janv. 1925)
Description:
-(1923-25)
-Ruhr: industrial region of Germany
-response to failure of Germany to pay 2nd installment of reparations - taking reparations in raw materials etc.
-workers' response: passive resistance/non-cooperation (fall in production), supported by government (expensive)
-more money printed --> hyperinflation by Nov. 1923 ($1 = 4.2 trillion marks)
-consequences of hyperinflation: life savings lost, economic ruin for people on fixed income/pension, barter economy, misery, further resentment + loss in confidence in Weimar government to resolve problems/crises (--> anti-republicanism)
-Ruhr problem resolved under Stresemann: called off passive resistance, & promised German commitment to paying reparations
