Congressional Reconstruction (1 janv. 1865 – 1 janv. 1877)

Description:

Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, which placed the South under military occupation, dividing the former Confederate states into five military districts, each under the control of the Union army. States had to ratify the 14th Amendment to be readmitted. The North agreed with this more, because it not only meant that they had more political power but it also meant that the Union was about to become whole again. This was the beginning step to Reconstruction and was a success.
