Decimation of bison on the Great Plains (1 janv. 1870 – 30 déc. 1875)

Description:

Civil war: bison ("buffalo") were killed a lot by European bacterial diseases

-now:
hide hunters made it so less than 200 bison were in U.S. (had been close to 15 mil a decade earlier) to sell their hides dor leather belts, leaving meat to rot. This shocked Native Americans.

-Congress passed an 1884 law to criminalize the hunting of female bison by anyone Native Americans, Grant vetoed it.
-Railroad/telegraph companies though bison were a nuisance.
-"U.S. treaties specified that certain Native nations, including the Comanches, Kiowas, Cheyennes, and Arapahos, could continue to live and hunt on the plains as long as there were enough bison on the range “to justify the chase.” Killing the bison meant robbing Native peoples of their sustenance, making it far easier to force them onto reservations."

Result: opportunities for cattle ranchers (used SOuth Texas and longhorns as a modeL)
