Period 6: Westward Expansion & Antebellum Era (1 janv. 1828 – 1 janv. 1860)
Description:
Enduring Understanding: As Manifest Destiny motivated westward expansion in the United States, the debate over slavery became fiercer as Northern and Southern states grappled for political power. The conflicts over whether to allow slavery in the new Western states led to bloody conflicts such as the Mexican-American War and Bleeding Kansas, and eventually led to the Civil War when the South seceded to preserve slavery.
The three impacts were slavery, economy, and expansion. The issue with slavery was since the South were reliable on slavery and the fact the North thought that slavery should be made illegal made the South fearing that they would loose their slaves. The South feared that the lose of slavery would make them crumble and the North had higher tariffs, so that the South felt as though the North was exploiting or using them. Since the idea of expanding westward was spreading around, the South also feared that they would lose their rights and power so the new states started to fight for that power.
