Philosophy: Started with the Quakers, who believed incarceration as an opportunity for penance and saw prisons as places wherein offenders might make amends with society and accept responsibility for their misdeeds.
Other Info: The Pennsylvania system made use of solitary confinement and encouraged rehabilitation. Many known figures of the time spoke in support of the Pennsylvania system, including Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Rush.
