1800 US president election (31 oct. 1800 – 9 déc. 1800)
Description:
During Adam's Presidency, his party the Federalists lost popularity because of the Alien and Sedition Acts, and the taxes imposed by them to build up the Navy and Army to prepare for a war with France. In the 1800 election, Anti-Federalists took control of both houses of Congress. However, two Anti-Federalist candidates were tied in the presidential election, which meant that the House of Representatives had to pick the president and the Federalists, still controlling the house, voted Thomas Jefferson to become President.
This was incredibly significant because it showed that the Constitution could handle the strains put against it.
