-blacks turned away from voting in Democratic Primary (presidential election 1964)-Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) created to hold own primary
-MFDP + "lily-white" Democratic Party both elected delegates to Convention, but LBJ made MFDP delegates non-voting guests (didn't want to lose support of southern Democrats)
