-Woolworth's lunch counter-grassroots movement: started with 4 black students, "Greensboro Four" (--> SNCC) - not linked to civil right movement in Alabama
-led to desegregation of lunch counter
-spread rapidly throughout the South, & attacked all areas of segregation in daily life
