Description:

Written by a collaborative group of “men of letters,” it is commonly viewed as a principle work of the Enlightenment. It was highly influential in shaping and spreading the kind of progressive thinking that eventually led to the French Revolution—edited by translator and philosopher Denis Diderot. The main work appeared between 1751 and 1772. A supplement of 4 volumes plus one plate volume was published in Paris and Amsterdam from 1776 to 1777.
