Description:

- Initially, the beginning of war created patriotism within Russia
- Support for the Bolsheviks initially plummet as they were seen as supporting the Germans
- The Russian Army was the largest standing army in Europe, with 13 million soldiers, however, it was extremely ill-equipped
- Russian’s opposed the idea of trench warfare
- Majority of soldiers were conscripted peasants with little training
- Battle of Tannenburg on the 18th of August 1914 had Russian casualties number 130,000 and the number of prisoners of war were 100,000
- Russian soldiers lacked appropriate ammunition and were limited on average to 3 bullets per man per day
- Minister of War, General Sukhomlinov, favoured using bayonets in traditional warfare which were inferior to modern machine guns
