The Florence Cathedral Dome (1420-1436)
by Filippo Brunelleschi
@Florence Cathedral, Florence (3 juill. 1420 – 9 mars 1436)
Description:
The dome of the Florence Cathedral presented a huge engineering challenge.
The dome was to be 143 feet wide.
This was the largest dome ever built and the widest vault ever spanned.
It would also be the highest as it started 170 feet in the air.
The challenge was made even more difficult by the decision, taken in 1366, to build the dome without any external buttressing.
In 1418 a competition was announced to choose an architect to build the dome.
It was a great engineering achievement BUT it is not an example of classically-inspired architecture.
The pointed dome is Gothic in style.
The herringbone pattern of brick work, however, which allowed the walls of the dome to curve inwards without centering for support, was almost certainly inspired by Brunelleschi's study of Roman building techniques.
In this way the building is classically inspired by engineering.
