- The USA and NATO carried out a 10-day joint exercise in Nov 1983 called ‘Able Archer 83’ – to simulate an invasion of the Soviet Union-The exercise was so real that the Soviet Union prepared themselves for an invasion
- The Soviet Union prepared their nuclear forces and put their border air forces on alert
