-Some government employees under FDR provided the Soviet Union with information
-House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC): held public hearings on suspected communists
-Included "Hollywood Ten"
-Richard Nixon was prominent member
-McCarthy not part of HUAC because he was part of the Senate
-Alger Hiss convicted of perjury, 5 years in jail
-McCarthyism (Joseph McCarthy)
-Accused over 200 government members of communism
-Charges often aimed at Democrats
-Downfall came when he attacked US military
-Seen as a bully
