Re-interpretation of the body as intermediary for punishment (16 nov 1791 – 14 mai 1848)

Description:

"By the end of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century, the gloomy festival of punishment was dying out... In this transformation, two processes were at work...The first was the disappearance of punishment as a spectacle... but... also... a slackening of the hold on the body... One no longer touched the body, or at least as little as possible, and then only to reach something other than the body itself... The body now serves as an instrument or intermediary... The body, according to this penality, is caught up in a system of constraints and privatios, obligations and probhibitions... From being an art of unbearable sensations punishment has become an economy of suspended rights."
