By 1865, the Native American way of life is under serious threat:
- no real unity between tribes
- vastly different aims between Indians and whites
- desire of the US government to assimilate Native Americans into white American society, effectively destroying Native American cultures - were going to turn Native Americans into literate, Christian farmers
- total failure of white society to understand Native American society
- nomadic (moving around) way of life found on the Great Plains under existential threat from settlement and the development of the transcontinental railroad
- whites took children away from their parents and brought them up as white children - when they returned they didn't fit in with either society
