Description:

George Washington served two terms as president: from the spring of 1789 to 1797.

1.) Washington's service as president brought about several central events in American history. These include (1) the ratification of the Bill of Rights to the Constitution, which details the civil rights and liberties of American citizens, including the freedom of speech, press, and religion; (2) the addition of five new states into the union (North Carolina -1789, Rhode Island -1790, Vermont -1791, Kentucky -1792 and Tennessee -1796); (3) the traditional establishment of a cabinet of advisors, and (4) the first Thanksgiving Proclamation.

2.) In addition, Washington set expectations for the social life and discourse of future presidents, something especially applicable to the present day.

3.) Lastly, Washington's Farewell Address, where he promoted a focus on education & morality and rebuked twisting foreign alliances, is one of the most acclaimed speeches in American history.
