Description:
Terry was initially born in Africa and sold into slavery as a baby. In the 1740s, she was living in Deerfield when the Great Awakening swept through, and she was converted. Then, in 1746, a band of Native Americans attacked several European families in Deerfield, Lucy Terry composed a poem about the events: “Bars Fight”. This is often regarded as the first formal literary work by an African American in North America
