The protest started as an industrial lockout and strike which before culminating in a battle between strikers and private security agents (The Pinkertons) on July 6, 1892The workers' loss became a major setback in worker unionization, and was a senseless waste of life, The Pinkerton protection agency slowly later became the Federal Bureu of Investigation
