Description:
The Beatnik was a media stereotype prevalent throughout the late 1940s, 1950s to mid-1960s that displayed the more superficial aspects of the Beat Generation (the people born between 1928 and 1945) literary movement of the late 1940s and early to mid 1950s. The Beatniks' philosophy was basically beat counterculture, anti materialism, anti-capitalist and anti-authoritarian, who remarked the importance of improving the interior of each beyond the material possessions and rules imposed by the system. Beatniks—sought out experiences that were more intensely "real." Sometimes "real" experiences meant physical pleasures such as sex and drugs or more spiritual pursuits such as Eastern religions, particularly Buddhism.
