-American Warship, the Maine exploded in the Havana harbor-US then entered the Cuban war for independence, driving out Spain from Cuba and sending a fleet to Spanish-controlled Philippines
-Teller Amendment: American would not annex Cuba after the war, but US troops remained there for another few years
