- Lytton offered a friendship treaty to Sher Ali, who wanted to keep friendly relations with both Russia and Britain by keeping both at arm's length- Lytton decided to invade Afghanistan, leading to Sher Ali fled and Treaty of Gandamak signed by Yakub Khan son of Sher Ali
