- In 1505, the King of Portugal appointed Almeida as governor in India for a 3-year term

- Bluewater policy or Cartaz System --> The vision was to make the Portuguese the masters of the Indian Ocean
- Major threats were Zamorin(Hindu Ruler at Calicut), Gujrat rulers, Arabs, and also Mameluke Sultan of Egypt
