Riots (1 juin 1965 – 1 juin 1968)

Description:

As African Americans continued to move into Northern cities through the 1960s and 1970s, whites continued to move out to the suburbs, which contributed to racial segregation. Urban African American communities grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of change. During the summer of 1965, frustrations came to a head when anger over police brutality led to six days of rioting in Watts, an overwhelmingly African American neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The Watts Riots ended with more than $40 million in property damage, 34 deaths, and approximately 4,000 arrests. More riots broke out in dozens of other American cities. Because of this, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference launched a campaign to use nonviolent tactics to target discriminatory housing and hiring practices in Chicago, Illinois.
