Description:
Asa carter + North Alabama White Citizens Council spearheaded anti-rock campaign --> fueled by racist paranoia ("NAACP uses this type of music as a means of pulling the white man down to the level of the negro")
- House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) began investigating and jailing suspected communist sympathizers and political dissidents (esp. artists and musicians)
- "linkages between the threats of both rock n roll and integration to US social conventions of the era" --> Carter & Co. lead witch-hunt for juke-box operators who included rock songs on the line up (rounded up 300,000 signatures on a petition)
